On May 14th, the 2025 Cedric J. Priebe, Jr., MD, Endowed Pediatric Surgery Lectureship and the Stony Brook Surgery Division of Pediatric Surgery welcomed Catherine Hunter, MD, FACS, FAAP, as a visiting lecturer. Dr. Hunter, a nationally recognized authority on the care of necrotizing entercolitis (NEC), presented a Grand Rounds lecture focused on her cutting-edge research in NEC, which is a devastating disease of the newborn intestine. Dr. Hunter's talk covered new topics on disease mechanisms and touched on future promising therapies.
Dr. Hunter is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery, Paula Milburn Miller Chair of Pediatric Surgery and Fellowship Program Director at Oklahoma Children's Hospital OU Health. She graduated from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, completed her General Surgery Residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California; and Pediatric Surgery and Research Fellowships at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. She specializes in chest wall deformities in children, surgical oncology and pediatric trauma Surgery.
The Priebe Lectureship, which was re-launched last year, was created to honor Stony Brook Surgery's founding Pediatric Surgery Chief, Dr. Cedric J. Priebe, Jr., in 2012. Dr. Priebe (1930–2019) served as professor of surgery and division chief from 1982 to 2007 and was known for developing strong patient care services, being a dedicated teacher and a beloved mentor. The Cedric J. Priebe, Jr., MD, Endowed Pediatric Surgery Lectureship aims to continue Dr. Priebe's legacy for future generations. For the second year in a row, several of Dr. Priebe's children were in attendance for the lectureship event.
