Stony Brook Surgery’s Surgical Oncology and Cardiothoracic Divisions Welcome New Surgeons

Stony Brook Medicine's Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome Doctors Michael S. Lui, MD, and Sivaveera Kandasamy, MD, to our Stony Brook Medicine faculty. They will be joining our Surgical Oncology and Cardiothoracic divisions, respectively.

Dr. Lui joins Stony Brook after concluding a Comprehensive Endocrine Surgery Fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. He finished his General Surgery residency at New York University School of Medicine in 2024, and received his MD from that same institution in 2018. He previously completed an Endocrine Surgery Research Fellowship at The University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, in 2022.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Department of Surgery at Stony Brook University as an endocrine surgeon," said Dr. Lui. "Endocrine surgery is a rapidly evolving specialty dedicated to the surgical management of both benign and malignant conditions of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. I was very fortunate to be exposed to the field early in my training, and I am eager to share this passion with future generations of surgeons. At Stony Brook, I look forward to contributing to the institution’s longstanding tradition of excellence by fostering multidisciplinary collaboration and delivering the highest quality care to our patients.”

Dr. Lui is certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery and a member of several professional organizations including the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons. He has authored or co-authored several papers in various professional publications. He is also an invited reviewer for the peer-reviewed medical journal, Nature Reviews Endocrinology.

Sivaveera Kandasamy, MDSivaveera Kandasamy, MD

"I am honored to join Stony Brook University Hospital and care for the patients of Long Island." - Dr. Sivaveera Kandasamy

Dr. Kandasamy comes to Stony Brook after having completed a Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery (2025) at the University of Maryland Medical Center where he was also a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Thoracic Surgery from July 2022 through July 2023. He finished a General Surgery residency at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2022 and a General Surgery residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2017. Between residency training, he completed a Research Fellowship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2019. After earning his MD from the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in 2012, he completed a Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship there and an observership at Drexel University/Hahnemann University Hospital, both in 2014.

"My focus has always been delivering compassionate, high-quality thoracic surgical care, and I am excited to do so at an institution known for excellence in patient care, research and innovation. Dr. Kandasamy is certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery and is also certified/licensed in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery and Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery. He has participated in more than a dozen presentations and authored or co-authored several papers and book chapters.
