Stony Brook Surgery Announces Five Faculty Promotions

Stony Brook Medicine's Department of Surgery announced five faculty promotions today (July 17, 2025). Doctors Kenneth Gow, MD (Visiting Professor to Professor); Sonya Marcus, MD (Assistant Professor to Associate Professor); Deborah Nagle, MD (Visiting Professor to Professor); Konstantinos Spaniolas, MD (Professor to Tenured Professor); and Christopher Vanison, MD (Assistant to Associate Professor) have received promotions in Stony Brook's Renaissance School of Medicine.

Dr. Kenneth Gow joined Stony Brook Surgery as the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery in 2023 after having been at Seattle Children's Hospital for 16 years. At Seattle Children's he was a Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgeon, Professor of Surgery (at the University of Washington), Co-Medical Director, Vascular Access Service; and Medical Advisor, Medical Executive Committee.

Dr. Gow earned his medical degree at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1991, completed an internship at the same institution in 1992, a residency at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1997, a Pediatric General Surgery Fellowship at British Columbia Children’s Hospital in 1999, and a Pediatric Surgical Oncology Fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, in 2001. He is certified in Pediatric Surgery and General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Gow has multiple Castle Connolly Top Doctors selections, has authored several abstracts and book chapters, and is a member of several national and international professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Pediatric Surgery Association.

Dr. Sonya Marcus is board-certified in Otolaryngology by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases within the nose and paranasal sinuses at the Stony Brook Surgery Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Her clinical interests and expertise includes

Dr. Marcus earned her medical degree at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC, in 2013, completed a residency in Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at the NYU School of Medicine, New York in 2018 and a Fellowship in Rhinology & Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery at Emory Sinus, Nasal & Allergy Center, Atlanta in 2019. She is a member of the American Rhinologic Society, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy.

Deborah Nagle, MD

Dr. Deborah Nagle is Chief of the Stony Brook Surgery Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery and is affiliated with Stony Brook's Cancer Center and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center. Her clinical interests and expertise includes:

  • Laparoscopic — including robotic — and conventional surgery for Colon and Rectal Cancer, Familial Polyposis, Diverticulitis and Rectal Prolapse
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Dr. Nagle is board certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. She earned her medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia in 1988, completed a residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Philadelphia in 1993, and a Fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia in 1994.

Dr. Nagle has multiple Castle Connolly Top Doctors selections, has published several papers and is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and the Association of Women Surgeons.

Dr. Konstantinos Spaniolas is Chief of Stony Brook's Division of Bariatric, Foregut and Advanced GI Surgery, Vice Chair for Quality for the Department of Surgery and President of Stony Brook Community Medical, P.C. & Meeting House Lane, P.C. He is the Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center, Director of the SOAR Collaborative and is also affiliated with the Heartburn and Esophageal Center and the Hernia Center. His clinical interests and expertise includes:

He also completed a General Surgery Research Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard), Boston. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a member of American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (Emerging Technologies and Procedures Committee), the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

He received his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, Washington in 2010, completed his residency training at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, Chicago in 2015, and then completed fellowship training at the University of California Davis, Head & Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery, Sacramento, CA in 2016. He is board-certified in Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Head & Neck Society and the American Academic of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery.
