He has held various positions and roles for the AAP over his more than two decades as a member including Chair of the Section on Surgery and is currently Chair of the AAP Pediatric Surgical Specialties Alliance, which oversees ten sections within the Academy.

Weir won with his abstract entitled, "Urothelial Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder in Pediatric Patients: A Comparison with Adults within the National Cancer Database. On his award-winning work, Weir said "This was a rewarding project because it involved interdisciplinary research between the pediatric surgery department, pediatric urology and pediatric medical oncology, with the intentions of increasing awareness of a rare cancer and highlighting the need for continued research to create pediatric-specific guidelines for urothelial cell carcinoma." He continued, "We hope that our study, the largest retrospective study to date, will provide some insight and add to the current literature for urothelial cell carcinoma in pediatrics."

The AAP focuses on the ideal physical, mental and social health of all children (infants, children, adolescents and young adults) around the world. Celebrating its 95th anniversary in 2025, the AAP was founded by 35 pediatricians as an independent framework to concentrate on the health needs of children, which was not a common idea at the time. The AAP consists of approximately 67,000 pediatricians and their national conference is open to General Pediatricians, Pediatric Subspecialists, Pediatric Residents/Fellows, Medical Students, Advance Practice Professionals, Allied Health Professionals, Health Care Professionals, and Nurses.
