Gomes has been serving as Chief Operating Officer for SBUH for the past six years and recently took on additional responsibilities as Interim Chief Executive Officer. As CEO, she is responsible for Long Island’s premier academic medical center and Suffolk County’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and Regional Perinatal Center.

With 624 beds, Stony Brook Medicine completed its largest expansion project in 2019 when it opened the Medical and Research Translation (MART) building and Stony Brook Cancer Center, and the 225,000-square-foot, 150-bed Hospital Pavilion, which includes the new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

A recognized authority in the healthcare industry, with more than 35 years of experience, Gomes has served a majority of that time at Stony Brook University Hospital. She began her career in the clinical chemistry and histology laboratories, quickly rising in various laboratory administrative positions to play a vital role in clinical pathway engineering.

Gomes was soon promoted to Associate Director for Quality Management, with administrative oversight for the departments of Continuous Quality Improvement and Decision Support Services. After her promotion and tenure as Chief Operating Officer of SBUH, she simultaneously became the hospital’s Chief Quality Officer, developing and implementing a successful quality and patient safety strategy.

“In every position Carol has held at Stony Brook University Hospital, she has led with passion for transformative healthcare and championed delivering the highest quality of care to our patients,” said Stony Brook University Interim President, Michael Bernstein, PhD.

It was under Gomes’ leadership that SBUH planned for expansion of its operating rooms and radiology suite, continued the integration of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital into the Stony Brook Medicine Hospital System, led award-winning sustainability efforts, and achieved the hospital’s recent recognition by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ for commitment to quality of care and outstanding clinical outcomes, amongst many other honors.

“Stony Brook Medicine has benefited from Carol’s experience, work ethic, accomplishments, and operational excellence. Her outstanding leadership skills will assure Stony Brook University Hospital a bright future,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. “She did an exemplary job leading our very complex expansion projects, which included a seamless transition of moving faculty, staff and patients from the existing hospital to new space.”

Gomes is the recipient of numerous leadership awards, including the Master Award and the Excellence in Management Award from the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the Long Island Business News Healthcare Heroes Award in Achievements in Healthcare and the Distinguished Alumna Award from Stony Brook University. In addition, she earned the Award of Distinction by the Healthcare Leaders of New York through the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2018.

A resident of Mount Sinai, NY, she received two Master’s degrees from Stony Brook University in Management and Policy from the Harriman School for Management and Policy and Healthcare Management and Administration from the School of Allied Health Professions.

“This is an exciting time for Stony Brook Medicine,” Gomes said, “as our upward trajectory continues into the future in terms of health system growth, reputation, quality outcomes and embracing a talented team of professionals delivering extraordinary and cutting-edge care. It is an honor and privilege to be part of this dynamic team.”
