Professional Statement

  • My program of scholarship is focused on maternal child health. The foundation of my nursing career was established on a cardiothoracic immediate care unit after I graduated from nursing school. After transferring to the postpartum unit, a year later, I incorporated my medical surgical experience while serving both high and low risk postpartum patients for almost seven years prior to becoming a nurse practitioner. I currently practice in both the inpatient postpartum unit as well as in the outpatient OB/GYN clinic, Safe and family-centered care are priority in my line of duty. Striving towards evidence-based practice and life-long learning, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) degree provided me with the scientific knowledge and skills deemed necessary to improve patient care, patient safety, patient satisfaction, and nursing policies/procedures for better patient outcomes. My specific areas of interest are prenatal, obstetrical and postpartum care including breastfeeding. For my DNP project, I conducted a quality improvement project to improve immunization rates on the postpartum unit through education and other hospital-based interventions. This project was presented at Women in Medicine Research Day at Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, New York, the Eastern Nursing Research Society 31st Conference in Providence, Rhode Island and the Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH) 22nd Annual Conference, Savannah Georgia. I embrace mentorship and preceptorship in both the academic and clinical settings. Future interests include educating nurses and advanced practice nurses to improve outcomes for patients and families in diverse populations. Through dedication and commitment, my aim is to be a change agent and support interventions that are needed to more closely align evidence-based guidelines, clinical practice and desired patient outcomes.
