Employee Engagement Survey

I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together in the two years since our last Employee and Physician Engagement and Culture of Safety Survey. Your feedback has been essential in improving the employee experience and building a culture where everyone feels respected, empowered, and engaged.

Because of your engagement and partnership, we were one of only 13 hospitals on Long Island to earn a Leapfrog “A” grade for hospital safety, and we remain ranked among the top 100 hospitals nationwide in several specialty areas, reflecting your exceptional skill, dedication, and teamwork.

After the 2023 survey, all supervisors were required to develop improvement plans based on employee feedback and other input, and we have continually tracked and followed up on their progress over the past two years. I’m pleased to share a brief overview of the strides we have made.

Based on your feedback, we focused our efforts on five key areas:

Culture of Respect

  • Our LEAD program continues to support leaders in fostering a respectful, engaged workplace.
  • We launched interactive, self-reflective training to build inclusive collaboration and stronger teamwork.
  • Continuous listening is built into daily huddles, department meetings, and leader rounding.

Feeling Valued and Appreciated

  • Daily expressions of gratitude during huddles
  • STAR Program, Employee of the Month, Life Saver, iCare, and Red Carpet Awards
  • Career Milestone Program, Retirement Clap outs, 90-Day Hoorays, and Mobile Spa visits

Culture of Safety

  • Our Just Culture framework supports fair, systems-based responses to errors.
  • Our interdisciplinary Workplace Violence Prevention Committee tracks trends and recommends improvements. Leadership now responds immediately after incidents and offers staff support.
  • Workplace safety measures include expanded weapons detection in the main lobby, patrols in high-risk areas, and enhanced security software with threat analysis and access control.

Staffing

  • We have a full complement of over 8,100 employees, one of the lowest vacancy rates (4.29%) in the state, and among the lowest voluntary turnover rates (7.18%) in healthcare.

Competitive Pay

  • Since January 2022, we’ve implemented salary enhancements in nearly 20 departments, totaling over $46 million and impacting thousands of employees.
  • We continue advocating for salary increases at the state level for critical support roles.
