Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

  • This form of glaucoma is the most common.
  • A family history may be seen in a significant number of patients.
  • It usually affects both eyes. The pressure of the eye is found to be elevated and there is damage to the optic nerve. Visual field testing frequently shows loss or constriction of the field.
  • Therapy includes the use of topical eye drops, laser treatment, and surgical intervention.
  • Loss of vision occurs in the late stages of disease. Pain or discomfort is not present.
