The physicians in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stony Brook Medicine have the expertise to diagnose and treat complex digestive conditions and diseases, including swallowing disorders.

Highlights include:

The POEM Procedure

Lionel S. D’Souza, MD, Chief of Endoscopy, was the first physician in Suffolk County to perform POEM, a minimally invasive procedure. The term POEM is an easy way to remember: PerOral Endoscopic Myotomy. POEM offers patients the most advanced treatment alternative to traditional surgery for certain gastrointestinal conditions, including achalasia. POEM provides long-term relief of symptoms in achalasia, which is a rare, potentially debilitating swallowing disorder that makes it hard or impossible for food and drink to enter your stomach.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center was created to provide individuals with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis the best possible multidisciplinary care available today. Our team aims to take care of patients from childhood to adulthood, from medical to surgical therapy, in a seamless, cohesive environment.

Liver Disease Program

The gastroenterologists on this team are highly skilled in evaluating and treating disorders and diseases of the liver, such as Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, autoimmune liver diseases and cirrhosis of the liver.
