Anjali G. Narayan, MD, MHA
Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry
Director, Child & Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry Service

Dr. Narayan is the medical director of 12 North, the Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry at Stony Brook University Hospital. She graduated from Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell before completing her general psychiatry residency and fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stony Brook University Renaissance School of Medicine. As Chief Fellow, she helped create the original Wise Mind Program, which is the structured DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) program utilized on 12 North.  She is committed to patient safety and satisfaction, and ensures each child receives individualized, high-quality, evidence-based care during their inpatient stay.

Dr. Narayan has certificates in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing, and was the recipient of the Harold Pass Award for Excellence in Psychotherapy in 2021. She also received the Max Fink Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research for her magnetic resonance spectroscopy study examining the glutamate to GABA ratio in the anterior cingulate cortex in patients with major depressive disorder.

Dr. Narayan is double board certified in both Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Darla Broberg, PhD
Clinical Assistant Professor
Clinical Director

Dr. Darla Broberg, a Clinical Psychologist who specializes in children's disorders, directs the clinical psychology services on 12 North. 

Dr. Broberg has held clinical appointments in both the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Pediatrics since 1990. Before becoming the clinical director of Inpatient Child Psychiatry in 2011, Dr. Broberg was the pediatric medical psychologist for Stony Brook University Hospital. She has extensive experience treating children and families exposed to traumatic events, living with chronic life-threatening diseases, and coping with grief.

Liz Wexler, LMSW
Social Worker

Liz has been working at Stony Brook since 2017 and has been 12 North’s main Social Worker since August 2020. Liz is a Long Island local, earning her bachelor's from St Joseph College and her master's in social work from Adelphi University. She has many years of experience with a wide range of ages and in many different settings, including at Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York and Acadia Nursing Home. She also has experience as a psychotherapist with Resilience Psychiatry in East Setauket, providing both individual and group therapy to adults and children. She has expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and supportive psychotherapy. 

Anaximenes Gonzalez, MSN, RN
Assistant Director of Nursing Child & Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry Services 

Anax has been the nurse manager on 12 North since 2021. He started his career at the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) in 2002, working in numerous group homes in patients with dual diagnoses. He became a Registered Nurse in 2012 and was working at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center before transferring to Stony Brook Medicine in 2014. He worked in Stony Brook’s CPEP (Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program) from 2014-2018 before taking on the role of Nursing Supervisor for 12 North from 2018-2020. He obtained his master's in nursing administration in December 2020 and has served as the Nursing Manager for 12 North since 2021. He is currently earning a degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.  

Patricia Woloszyn, DNP, RN, PMHCNS-BC, NPP
Psychiatric Nurse Liaison

Patricia Woloszyn, DNP, RN, PMHCNS-BC, NPP is the Psychiatric Nurse Liaison to medical and surgical areas as well as on 12N. She also serves as a clinical instructor in the School of Nursing and for Preventing and Managing Crisis Prevention (PMCS) at Stony Brook. Patricia started her nursing career by earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from SUNY Downstate in 1986. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing, with a specialty as a clinical nurse specialist in adult mental health, from Adelphi University in 1992. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Quinnipiac University with a specialty in nursing leadership and quality improvement in 2020. Patricia is ANCC certified as a clinical nurse specialist and is also a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Patricia has an extensive nursing background and has clinical experience working in inpatient, outpatient clinic, day hospital, partial day hospital, walk-in clinic/evaluation center, psychiatric emergency room and psychiatric home care. Patricia has experience with behavioral health populations, with over half of her career spent working with the inpatient adolescent population. Patricia also has an extensive career in nursing administration including positions as nurse manager and assistant director of nursing. Prior experiences include working as a school nurse in the community and providing supportive psychotherapy in private practice. She has also done research and intensive training in DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) with adolescents. Throughout her career, she has received numerous nursing excellence awards with the most recent one from the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council Nurse of Excellence in 2022.

Gabrielle Carlson, MD
Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics

Gabrielle A. Carlson, M.D., has been a professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stony Brook University since 1985.

Dr. Carlson obtained her MD degree from Cornell University Medical College and completed her adult psychiatry training at Washington University in St. Louis and at the National Institutes of Mental Health. She completed a fellowship and research fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UCLA and subsequently taught on the faculty.

Dr. Carlson specializes in childhood psychopathology and psychopharmacology in general, and the subjects of childhood and adolescent depression and bipolar disorder, specifically. She has written over 200 papers and chapters and has co-authored two books. Dr. Carlson is listed in Best Doctors in America, Best Doctors in the New York Metropolitan area and Newsday's Best Doctors. She was awarded the American Psychiatric Association's Blanche F. Ittleson Award for research in child and adolescent psychiatry and the New York Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's Hulse Award. She has been president of the International Society for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology and is the chair of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's Program Committee.

Dr. Carlson has a strong commitment to community child and adolescent psychiatry. She works closely with Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES, school districts and mental health agencies.
