The Stony Brook Emergency Department Patient Navigator Program was created to support and empower patients suffering from ongoing effects of trauma, by:
- Partnering with patients to understand what matters most to them
- Providing supportive education to help patients decide if trauma therapy aligns with their needs, including information on a range of approaches to healing and recovery
- Helping patients interested in therapy select among a wide network of local and online therapists after identifying their preferences and constraints
- Helping patients secure an appointment with a therapist, as needed
- Offering a supportive brief intervention if desired, to foster coping skills as patients await their first session with a therapist
- Connecting patients with additional treatment resources as needed, including:
- Domestic violence advocacy and counseling
- Substance use treatment programs
- Postpartum mental health support services
- Eating disorder treatment and nutritional support services
