Center for Interprofessional Innovation at Stony Brook Medicine

The Center for Interprofessional Innovation at Stony Brook Medicine promotes best practices in interprofessional education, research, and collaborative practice.

Mission

The mission of the Center for Interprofessional Innovation (CIPI) is to promote and foster a culture of interprofessional collaboration in education, practice, andragogy, and scholarship that is embraced by faculty, students, preceptors, practitioners, and all members of the Stony Brook Medicine community and the university at large.

Vision

The Center for Interprofessional Innovation seeks to prepare a workforce who will transform health care and improve population health through recognizing, appreciating, and embracing the power of teams and teamwork.

What is Interprofessional Education (IPE)?

Interprofessional Education (IPE) occurs “when students from two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes”(WHO, 2010).

What is Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP)?

Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) happens when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, carers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings (WHO, 2010)

What is Interprofessional Collaborative Learning (IPCL)?

Interprofessional Collaborative Learning (IPCL) happens when faculty, students and practitioners recognize each profession’s distinctive disciplinary expertise, values the benefits of teamwork, and encourages a learning culture in which these principles are taught and modeled in an environment of respect, cultural sensitivity, and with psychological safety in mind(CACHE, 2019IPEC, 2023).
