Varicose veins are extremely common and often overlooked. This condition affects over 30 million Americans, yet only about 1.9 million seek treatment. While not all varicose veins cause problems, vein-related leg pain can lead to other serious conditions. If untreated, they may progress to a more serious form of vein disease called chronic venous insufficiency, leading to swelling, skin damage and ulceration.

Risk Factors:

Those with the following risk factors will benefit most from a vein screening:

  • Family history
  • Increasing age
  • Pregnancy and hormonal changes
  • Obesity
  • Prolonged standing and/or sitting
  • Prior deep vein thrombosis

Symptoms:

Common symptoms include:

  • Aching leg pain
  • Rash on the legs
  • Burning or itching of the skin
  • Tired legs and a feeling of heaviness
  • Leg swelling

The most advanced form of venous disease includes swelling, darkening of the skin and skin ulceration (open sores).
