Celebrating Female Cardiologists Worldwide

March is Women’s History Month. We are excited to celebrate all the hard working women in our office who serve our community in pursuit of providing great cardiovascular care to our patients. From the ladies who are the first point of contact for our patients to our female physicians, we’d like to express our deepest gratitude and admiration for all the hard work they put in to make our office a well-oiled machine.

Early female pioneers have paved the way for young women today to pursue their medical profession aspirations. We have them to thank for contributions to medical advancements throughout history and for helping the medical community as a whole.

Women in Cardiology: The Heart of the Discipline.

Let’s take a look at three of the women who have made an impact on the field of cardiology.

1.    Maude Abbott

Dr. Abbott

One of Canada’s first female physicians, Maude Abbott opened a clinic for women and children in 1896 and focused mostly on studying heart defects. In 1936, she developed a classification system for Congenital Heart Disease.

2.  Helen B. Taussig, MD, FACC

Dr. Taussig, MD, FACC
Dr. Taussig developed a surgical procedure that corrects the congenital heart disease called Tetralogy of Fallot, which is a potentially fatal disease in infants that prevents the blood from carrying enough oxygen to the heart. She is considered to be the founder of Pediatric Cardiology.

Later in 1965, she became the first female president of the American Heart Association. Finally, in 1981, she was the first woman to be awarded the American College of Cardiology (ACC) gifted educator award.

3.  Myra Adele Logan, MD

Dr. Logan, MD

Having received a scholarship to attend New York College and being among the first female surgeons, Dr. Logan became the first woman physician to perform open heart surgery on a human.

The work of these women and others around the world have left a positive impact on the world of cardiology and have helped shape the discipline into what it is today. We’re grateful to have female cardiologists in our own practice who are leaving their powerful footprints in the medical world.
