Stony Brook remains Long Island’s only hospital among the top 1% nationwide for overall care
January 27, 2026 — Stony Brook Medicine (SBM) has once again been recognized by Healthgrades as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2026 — marking the fourth consecutive year the health system has achieved this distinction.
This achievement places SBM among the top 1% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical excellence and remains the only health system on Long Island included in this elite group.
Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital share the America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™.
“This honor speaks to the shared focus across Stony Brook Medicine on providing exceptional care for each and every patient,” said William A. Wertheim, MD, MBA, Executive Vice President, Stony Brook Medicine. “Receiving this achievement for the fourth year in a row reflects the daily collaboration of our teams in maintaining an exemplary standard of care throughout the organization.”
“The outstanding care found at Stony Brook is made possible by a deep commitment to the highest standards of quality and continuous improvement across our entire health system,” said Carol A. Gomes, MS, FACHE, CPHQ, Chief Executive Officer of Stony Brook University Hospital. “I am sincerely grateful to our physicians, nurses, and all members of our healthcare team whose compassion, expertise, and dedication make excellence possible every day.”
How Healthgrades Determines the Ranking:
Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates across more than 30 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide.
If all hospitals performed at the level of America’s 50 Best, an estimated 209,081 lives could have been saved between 2022 and 2024.*
