Office of Health, Equity & Advocacy (OHEA)

The Office of Health, Equity & Advocacy in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stony Brook Medicine recognizes that individual differences play a vital role in delivering care that truly meets the needs of our patients. A variety of perspectives extends beyond race—it is multi-dimensional, including gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, and more. Through education, community engagement, and workforce enrichment, we are committed to building a collaborative, welcoming, and forward-thinking approach that embraces and supports all individuals.

Mission:

The mission of the Office of HEA is to create an inclusive and inspired department with the purpose of all members achieving their greatest potential for the benefits of the community we serve.

Vision:

The Office of HEA has been established to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all employees, with an emphasis on addressing systemic barriers and promoting equitable opportunities for professional growth. The office will focus on initiatives that cultivate an engaged, empowered workforce committed to attracting, developing, and advancing talented faculty, residents, and staff from a wide range of backgrounds. Through strategic initiatives, partnerships, innovation, education, and public health policy, the Office of HEA aims to be a driving force in fostering a collaborative and forward-thinking institutional culture.

The Office of HEA maintains the following three primary Mission Areas:

  • A focus on Care Excellence: Closing gaps in access, communication, and outcomes.
  • Workforce Enrichment: Offering mentorship, leadership pathways, and staff wellness initiatives.
  • Community Partnership: Building stronger connections with organizations that support care beyond the ED.
