What's the difference between Clomid and Femara?

The first step in any fertility journey is to determine what is causing your infertility. Once determined, your doctor can work with you to choose the best course of treatment.

Femara and Clomid are two well-known drugs in the fertility community that are used in many fertility treatments.

What do these drugs do?

Estrogen plays a crucial role in conception; if levels are too high, it can affect your fertility and overall health. These drugs use estrogen manipulation to tell your brain that there is less estrogen in your system, triggering the production of your follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

It is essential to know what each medication does and work with your healthcare team to determine the best course of treatment for your journey.

Clomid:

Clomid (Clomiphene Citrate) is used to stimulate ovulation and egg development. It does this by blocking estrogen receptors causing the pituitary gland to produce more FSH and Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which triggers follicle development and ovulation.

Femara:

Femara (letrozole) is also used to stimulate egg development. This drug interferes with the body's ability to produce estrogen from androgens. This will lower the amount of estrogen in the body and promote the growth of eggs.

While both medications are used for similar reasons, they use different methods in our bodies to achieve the same goal. This is why it is important to provide your doctor with your detailed medical history. Here at Island Fertility, we will work with you to help you make an informed decision.
