Message from Wayne C. Waltzer, MD, FACS, Director of Transplantation Services, Chairman and Professor of Urology

Wayne Waltzer

Stony Brook Medicine provides a unique combination of research, teaching, and healing.  As part of the State University of New York, Stony Brook Medicine is not only a teaching hospital and medical school but is home to the longest active transplant program on Long Island.

Our mission at Stony Brook is to provide the highest level of care to the widest range of patients possible.  Transplantation Services is a key element in our efforts to be a leader in the health care delivery system.  Our multi-disciplinary transplant team consists of surgeons, nephrologists, coordinators, nurses, laboratory personnel, social workers, financial counseling, and an administrative staff, all dedicated to providing the renal patient with quality care.

All members of the team work hard to ensure that your experience is a great one with a great outcome. Our Transplant Surgeons have performed over 2,000 kidney transplants with a one-year graft survival success rate that stands at over 94%. Our clinical services are provided by a team of transplant physicians and nephrologists with a special interest in the patient.

When you decide to come to Stony Brook Medicine for treatment of End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) through transplantation, you are assured of receiving top-quality care. We are proud of the men and women who have dedicated their professional lives to this program, and we look forward to providing you with a chance to receive a kidney transplant from one of the finest programs in New York State.

We hope that you will take the opportunity to meet with the Transplant Team and get to know on a first-hand basis the people who can help change your life. We look forward to serving the residents of Long Island for many years to come and to providing the opportunity for individuals with ESRD to seek out the treatment option of kidney transplant at Stony Brook Medicine.

I encourage you to search our website and research our statistics. I believe you will find it a useful resource in making your decision to come to Stony Brook Medicine and the Transplantation Program.
