The A-STEP program is a comprehensive 80-hour course, completed over two weeks of study. The program consists of both classroom and hands-on training. The aim of the program is to provide the participants with the necessary education and training to develop knowledge about sleep medicine and prepare them to have the skills required of a sleep technologist. A sleep technologist is responsible for administering sleep tests to patients at a sleep facility. A-STEP adheres to the standards defined by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and will ensure that applications meet the minimum standards for employment as a Polysomnographic Trainee.

Minimum Requirements for Enrollment
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age
- Submission of application with the following documentation provided:
- Form of Identification (Driver’s License, Passport)
- Proof of High School Graduation or equivalent
- New York State completed or documentation of current enrollment in an approved associate or higher degree program
- Must be able to perform all essential job duties required of polysomnography technologist to minimally include:
- Follow sleep study procedures for preparation and setup.
- Follow established sleep study protocols consistent with the AASM clinical practice guidelines and practice parameters.
- Able to communicate educational instructions to patients regarding the sleep study and orient them to equipment.
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control.
- Ability to meet physical demands essential to completing the job functions.

Course Objectives:
- Introduction to the history of sleep medicine, an overview of sleep disorders and sleep medicine.
- Basic understanding of the nervous, respiratory, skeletal and cardiovascular systems.
- Training in patient safety, infection control, fall precautions and recognizing emergencies.
- Training in obtaining patient histories, interpersonal communication and management of a difficult patient.
- Training in patient confidentiality, informed consent and discussion of HIPAA regulations.
- Instruction in preparation of the patient and equipment for polysomnography.
- Introduction to polysomnographic recording, treatment equipment and electrical safety.
- Introduction to sleep stage scoring and polysomnographic event detection.
- Instruction on standard polysomnographic procedures, including the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT).
- Instruction in the application of positive airway pressure and supplement oxygen as well as discussion of nocturnal ventilation.
The tuition for New York Pulmonary Consultants A-STEP Course is $3,000. The entire payment is due a week prior to the first day of the course. The cost of materials is included as part of the tuition. Payments can be made by check. All payments should be made payable to Stony Brook Community Medical and mailed to 1500 Route 112, Building 2, Suite B, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776. Please note that tuition is non-refundable. However, if you are unable to attend your registered session, you can be enrolled in a later-dated session.
