How to Speak to Your Loved Ones About Your Fertility Treatments

Dealing with infertility is a highly personal situation. Many people prefer to go the private route and only share their struggle with a few people they trust.  Others find support in sharing more publicly, surrounding themselves with a network of friends, family, co-workers, and social media connections to draw strength from their kind words and experiences.

Especially with the holidays coming around, you may want to share. It is important to remember that there is no “right” way to go about it, but if you want to share and are not sure how here are a few ideas:

MANAGE EXPECTATIONS
It’s important to remember that people don’t always react how we expect them to. If there’s someone in your family or circle of friends that you would like to share your journey with, it’s best to not have expectations of how they will react when you decide to tell them. Share with them because you want to, not because of how you think they will react.

CHOOSE SUPPORT
If you’re going to tell someone, it may be best to tell an individual who has shown to be consistently supportive of you for a long time. Building a family can be a long process and having stable support can be imperative.  Resolve.org has a variety of resources for local and national support you can join.
